Full Speed

Posted by: lovein3d on: March 26, 2009

About this time last month, we were breathing a collective sigh of relief, having just gotten home from the hospital.

I will readily admit to being traumatized by the whole situation, but I wasn’t able to fully express it until we were safe at home. I know during that time God gave me strength and the ability to steel myself  and bear with everything that was going on. Because I am sure that I didn’t possess such before we entered those hospital doors.  While Dan seems to think the only person traumatized was Ethan.

Ethan has been recovering remarkably well. He has asked us numerous times, “Why did the doctor scratch me?” And we have responded, ” Well, your belly was hurting badly and the doctor had to take a look inside. So he made a little cut where he saw that your appendix was very angry and causing the problem. Then he took it out and sewed you up!”

He has made drawings of his ordeal. The one below shows a Mom and Dad taking care of their boy who is at the hospital. The ink blob on the boy is the White Thing. And all that loopy stuff on the left side? Ethan explained that is “the pole”. His IV pole. I think it is great that he is talking and drawing about his experience! Though I am no psychologist, surely they would nod in agreement that he is recovering well emotionally as well. I mean, all the people in the picture are smiling! :)

X

The day the last steri-strip fell off, he ran to us and said, “My last little white thing fell off! So does that mean I can run and jump now??!!”

“We have to go back to the Doctor soon and he will check your White Thing and let us know if it’s okay for you to do all those things”, I replied. As you can imagine, keeping a 4-year old from running, jumping, climbing, wrestling, going to the park, and doing anything that might overexert himself is next to impossible. But we have managed. Lots of coloring, reading, and tic-tac-toe. LOL :)

And now, here we are, waiting on Dr. Robertson to come in the exam room. Ethan is playing hopscotch on the floor tiles and I am reading a magazine to pass the time.  He finally comes in and examines Ethan. We talk about Ethan’s weight loss and he tells me that it can take a couple months for his metabolism to get back on track. I laugh, thinking about the “midnight snacks” that he has been asking for each night lately, and say “I think it’s coming back!”  He also says that sometimes the body doesn’t like the internal stiches and may spit one out somewhere around the incision site. And for the next year, the incision site will be lumpy from the scar tissue.

Ethan breaks into the conversation, saying, “Can I run now?”

And Dr. Robertson, smiles and says, “You can go full speed!”

As we leave the room, Ethan fires off a few questions, “I don’t have to stay here? I don’t have to eat in the bed? No pole either?”

When I confirm that we are leaving and answer all his questions with “no”, he had a look of surprise on his face. And I had to laugh. It looked something like this:

Full speed ahead, baby! :)

Boys Will Be… Boys

Ethan is screaming. Really screaming!

Dan is laughing.

And I am in the bedroom. The door is shut.. and locked for good measure. I haven’t determined if that is to keep them out or keep me in.

They are doing what they do every day.. pestering the shit out of each other. They can’t do any UFC-fighting, since the Doc has yet to give the official “OK” on that. So instead, they run laps around the house, Nerf guns in hand, fully loaded, ducking behind counters and corners for protection.

Every few seconds, Ethan will let out a shrill scream that should itself bring CPS to our door, but thankfully doesn’t. That is then followed by Dan saying, “Ok– you need to protect your eyes then! Do you want your safety goggles or your sunglasses?” Yes.. I swear he just said that.

I cringe and everything in me wants to go crashing into the other side of the house and send everyone to bed.

But as my muscles tense in anticipation of bolting over there, I hear giggling from the two of them, which may or may not be followed by a short conversation, citing important details such as who “started it”.

It is a short pause followed by more gunfire, chasing, and general craziness.

I have to catch myself though and let them “do their thing”. Because as much as I want to ..

Hold on.. here’s what I am hearing now:

Ethan: “OK, I’ve got a lot of bullets in here!”

Dan: “You are never gonna fiiiiiiind meeeeeee!”

Ethan: “I want Mooooooooooom!!!”

Dan: Pops out from behind the bedroom door– yes, he invaded my room– Ethan sees him and ….

Ethan: “AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” in shrill screaming voice. He climbs in the bed next to me and announces, “Mom, Daddy shot me in the eye and it really hurt badly!” complete with sobs.

Dan: “Well, you shot me in the face!”

I have to interject–”Yeah, but you are wearing GLASSES!”

Ethan leaves and returns with a soft baseball bat and plastic golf club, saying to Dan, “Well, we could use these and whack them together”..

They both leave the room and within seconds Ethan is once again screaming..

Back to what I was saying…….

Because as much as I want to have them stop all that, I know that this is just normal run-of-the-mill dad & son interaction. Who am I to rain on their parade of hijinks and silliness? Would I rather Dan came home and not interact with him? Should Ethan remember his Dad as a workaholic, who never had time for him growing up? Of course not. I wanted a man who would not just provide financially for his family, but the kind of dad who would provide so many other very important things that have nothing to do with the greenbacks.  A hands-on, silly, fun, get on all fours and bark like a puppy, roughhouse and wrestle, play drums & air guitar, have make believe wars (with Ethan yielding his “Light Saver”, saying “Victory is MINE!”), spend hours creating things with Legos or Play-Doh– kind of Dad. And that’s exactly what I got. Together, they do things that never cross my mind, such as eating their grilled cheese into the shape of guns, turning straws into drumsticks, something as simple as a pen lid can morph into a racecar, empty paper towel holders become swords, feet jut into each other’s face accompanied with a “smell it”, and imaginary invisible bullets are shot out of all parts of the body. It’s true, they are loud, noisy, full of energy even when I am not, they play rough and really, they just can’t help it. What a difference a chromosome can make! HAH!  Life in our house is never boring or dull or quiet for very long, and I love it!

Now, if you will excuse me, I have to go lay down the law, because in their current bout of jousting, my laptop got lightly whacked with a blunt instrument. I hope that Nerf gun is still fully loaded.

Did you know that there is a way to play a game and feed people at the same time?

It’s true! Fun, educational, and addictive are three words I would use to describe this interactive game.

Freerice.com is an educational website where you answer questions in a variety of different subjects, such as geography, math and chemistry, art and language. When you get a question right, ten grains of rice are donated to a person in need. (I have to admit, it can be hard to stop playing!)

The rice is distributed by The UN World Food Program, and is completely supported by the advertising.

The site is so successful that 43,942,622,700 grains of rice were donated in 2008.  FreeRice has generated enough rice to feed more than two million people since its inception in October 2007!

So go play, learn something, and feed someone.

Ankles

Posted by: lovein3d on: March 10, 2009

Ethan’s wrist made a little crack today.

“Ooh Mom, did you hear that?”

“I sure did.”

“My hand-ankle just popped!”

I was laughing so hard I couldn’t even say anything back. And he just started laughing too.

One’s wrist and, tonight, your knuckles have all joined the list of Ankles. In addition to the originally named ankles.

It was just too cute to not mention.

Tonight, I began Course Two in the Wilton Series of cake decorating classes. Above is a picture of the booklet that will accompany me to each class, and by the final lesson will be written in, highlighted in spots, splattered in buttercream or royal icing, and probably smell like vanilla or almond.  And I will treasure it!

I didn’t have to bring in a cake that was just baked a couple hours ago ready for a thick coat of buttercream, like I did each week before. In fact, I won’t bring in a cake until the final lesson when we will assemble of sugary garden of flowers and whimsical birds atop a small cake. I can’t promise it will look as good as the one on the cover above, but they had probably 39 tries to get it to look that good. I will have just one.

So I don’t have any pictures to show you of my cakes each week, but promise to post some pics of the flowers I learn along the way. I am feeling really jazzed about this course and building on what I have already learned from our instructor, Linda, who has her own cake shop. And it doesn’t hurt to have a husband who is extremely supportive of me taking these classes. Thanks, Babe :)

To my playgroup Moms, I really appreciate you letting me practice my skills for you! :)

I did a lot of thinking about what I planned to give up for Lent.

There are all the old stand-bys, such as giving up sodas, desserts, using profanity, drinking alcohol, and smoking, things like that.  But those don’t seem to really “hold up” to me. Now, I am not saying that these aren’t sacrifices for some, heck, I’ve abolished some of these things from my life for 40 days.

Lent is not just about giving up something in your life that you really enjoy. (I don’t feel that giving up Dr.Pepper for forty days brings me closer to God.I tried it.) It is about prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.  Lent is about giving.  That really struck a chord with me. I don’t think I have ever thought about it that way before. For a few days, I mulled that over.

So I embarked this Lent, expecting more of myself, to be more giving.  In doing so, I have gotten more opportunities to fulfill those expectations. Daily.

Six days ago, I was standing in line at Walgreen’s behind nine other people. I watched the clock tick off ten minutes and with no movement in the line, so was I. I made a dash for the make-up counter and only one woman stood there, her purchases being rung up. She was counting out her change, there was a lot of it, and when all tallied, she was still 83 cents short. She tells the clerk, “I don’t have any more money- let me go check around in my car for more. Go ahead and check her out–” she says, flustered, and points in my direction. I smile thankfully, because I have no idea how long her coin search is going to take. She could have a lot of ground to cover. But in that moment, I think about my Lenten promise to make opportunities for giving. I was meant to leave that other line and stand behind this woman. I reached for my wallet and paid the rest of her tab. Then took care of mine. I was out of the store before she returned. And while a small gesture, it was a good start.

I mention this not for a pat on the back. But so you may understand some of my upcoming posts for helping others. Share, give, join my helping hands. One person can make a difference in the life of another. Sounds cliche– but I bet the 83 cent lady would nod her head in agreement.

Because I Can’t Resist Playing Tag

Posted by: lovein3d on: March 7, 2009

Posts like this certainly don’t help break the SAHM stereotype, but oh well.

In all my “free time” I take part in playing Tag, blogger-style.

For this one, go to google.com and type in your first name and the word “needs”, then hit Enter. Now, write down the first ten links that make sense. Ok, here’s mine:

1.  Melody needs airplay.  [ Well, my rendition of  Rascal Flatts "Broken Road" isn't too shabby]

2. Melody needs 1 female and 1 male singer. [I guess someone has heard my rendition of "Broken Road".. darnit]

3. Melody needs her Harmony. Without Harmony, Melody’s not gonna be a melody. Yea, she needs Harmony to color her life. [Oh, I don't know.. My life is pretty colorful already!]

4. Melody needs your help to continue her full, healthy life! To adopt Melody financially, Click Here. [No really-- Click HERE!!!!]

5. Melody needs our prayers. [Now this one has to be my favorite yet! I love knowing others are out there surrounding me in prayers. I have seen, many times, the power that praying has worked in my life.]

6. Melody needs a loving owner. [Actually, I already have one. And He is!]

7. Melody needs time. [ Ahhh, time sweet time! Yes, I agree. Time for lovin' on my husband, for making phone calls to the fam, to scrapbook, time to read an entire magazine in one sitting, and more time for hugging and having fun with Ethan before he starts school]

8. Melody needs a real coffee break. [I don't like coffee, but if you make it a kiddie hot chocolate from Starbucks, I am sooo in!]

9. Melody needs to be there. [Yeah! I think...LOL]

10. And finally, Melody needs to cut her damn hair and give it some style!!!! [Check the box on this one, I just got my haircut yesterday!]

And TAG, you’re it!
